Walking in Obedience: Take The ‘Next Step’

Many of us assume that growing in our faith means doing something grand for God – preaching to thousands, going on mission trips, or accomplishing something extraordinary for the Kingdom.

But more often than not, God does His greatest work in us through the ordinary acts of daily obedience.

Spiritual growth isn't usually formed in a single defining moment. It is cultivated over time as we choose to trust God by taking small steps of obedience – opening His Word when we don't feel like it, forgiving those who have hurt us, confessing a sin, praying consistently, and saying "yes" to whatever God is asking of us today.

These small steps of obedience may seem insignificant, but God uses them to strengthen our faith, shape us into the likeness of Christ, and lead us into the purpose He has prepared for us.

Obedience Produces Maturity

Paul writes in Ephesians 4:14:

“As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of people, by craftiness in deceitful scheming.”

As we take the necessary steps in our faith, we begin to mature spiritually. As we grow in our knowledge of Him and His Word, we are no longer easily swayed by false teaching or unstable in our walk with God. Instead, we become grounded, discerning, and steadfast.

While sin no longer rules over us as believers (though we may still struggle), spiritual immaturity definitely leaves us vulnerable to deception – and this is the danger. As we walk in obedience and take the next steps God places before us, He uses those acts of faithfulness to strengthen us, deepen our discernment, and establish us in truth.

A.W. Tozer once said, "Spiritual strength is not the result of talent, but of surrender and obedience."

Growth doesn't happen accidentally. It happens as we continually say "yes" to God in the everyday moments of life, as we continue taking our next steps.

Obedience Shapes Us Into Christlikeness

Paul continues in Ephesians 4:15: "...we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, that is, Christ."

The goal of the Christian life is Christlikeness. And every step of obedience makes you more like Him. We look to the way He lived, the way He loved, and the way He submitted Himself to the Father's will. As we follow Him, God gradually shapes us into His image.

Spurgeon once said, “Obedience to Christ is the badge of true discipleship. As we obey, we are made like Him.”

However, while we are called to obey, our transformation ultimately depends on the work of the Holy Spirit within us. Galatians 2:20 explains this best: “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.”

Yet, this transformation rarely happens all at once. God shapes us over time as we continue to walk with Him. As John Chrysostom said…“The likeness of Christ is not achieved in one great leap, but in thousands of small obediences.”

Perhaps that's what taking next steps really looks like – not jumping into grand tasks, but countless little acts of obedience that move us closer to the image of Christ.

Obedience Reveals God's Direction

Many people spend their lives searching for purpose.

We ask questions like, "What is God's will for my life?" or "What has He called me to do?"

But the truth is, God rarely reveals to us the full picture. He often just reveals the next step. And as you obey that, He reveals another.

Psalm 119:105 says: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

Notice that it doesn’t say His word is a lighthouse that illuminates the whole horizon. It’s a lamp that gives just enough light for the step right in front of you.

We often want the full blueprint before we move forward. But God frequently calls us to trust Him with only the next act of obedience.

As we obey what God has already made clear, He often reveals new opportunities, responsibilities, and assignments along the way. Rather than obsessing over discovering some grand, hidden purpose or calling, we are invited to faithfully steward the opportunities God places before us today.

The next step may seem small. It might mean surrendering your pride and choosing humility in a situation. It might mean joining a connect group or serving in a ministry.

Small acts of obedience often become the pathway through which God shapes our future and defines our purpose.

Conclusion

You may not know what the next five years hold. You may not have every question answered or every detail of God's plan mapped out. But chances are, you already know the next step He is calling you to take.

Every day, God places before us opportunities to take another step. Not necessarily a giant leap, but just one simple step.

Whatever that next step may be, remember this: God is far more interested in your small acts of faithfulness than your grand gestures. He is not asking you to accomplish something extraordinary overnight. But he is inviting you to walk with Him, one step of obedience at a time.

But we must also remember that our obedience is not an attempt to earn God's favor, but a response to the grace we have already received through Christ.

So don't wait for a better time, more confidence, or better circumstances. Take the next step today.
